Our story

About Creative Art Place

Creative Art Place is our colorful little studio on East Brainerd Road, where children, homeschoolers and grown-ups explore their creativity, learn something new and make a little mess. It grew out of 21 years of bringing art to Chattanooga families.

Today our team of artists teaches here every week, with wonderfully playful job titles, and every one of them means it.

A note from Jennifer

A school with no art, so I started some

In 2005, my own children attended a school that had no visual arts program. I believed every child deserved the opportunity to discover the joy of creating, so I decided to do something about it.

I started an art program at one school. Then another. And another. Before long, we were bringing art to children at 14 schools across Chattanooga.

COVID shut that school program down. It has been rebuilding ever since and is back in eight schools as a non-profit. Just before COVID, I opened our brick-and-mortar studio.

Today, Creative Art Place is our colorful little studio on East Brainerd Road, where children, homeschoolers, and grown-ups can explore their creativity, learn something new, make a little mess, and discover what they're capable of.

The school program still runs as Children's Art Place. Same person, same 21 years.

From Jennifer

How we teach

We always start and build off the basics. We learn the elements of art and the principles of design, and we experiment with as many different art materials as I can possibly share with our students. We start with the foundations and do a lot of drawing, then we layer on additional materials, techniques and styles, study artists of the past along with contemporary artists, and make our creations unique.

I believe that children can really learn a lot. We don't dumb it down. We speak to them like the brilliant little minds that they are.

Art is about alchemy and exploration and experimentation.

Founder and Chief Happiness Officer

Jennifer Strickler

Hi, I'm Jennifer, Founder and Chief Happiness Officer of Creative Art Place! I started out in 2005 with a simple belief: children deserve a place where art is not just taught, but celebrated. With a B.F.A. from Washington University and a career rooted in art and design, I created Creative Art Place as a space where artists of every age can explore, experiment, build confidence, and discover just how capable they really are.

I'm a mixed-media artist at heart. I love combining paint, glass, texture, mark-making, found materials, and pretty much anything I can get my hands on to create layers of meaning, almost like inventing a visual language of my own.

My favorite moment as a teacher is seeing the look on someone's face when they suddenly realize, "I made that!" I love helping students discover that mistakes are often possibilities in disguise. Sometimes the moment you're most frustrated is the moment just before the magic happens.

I find inspiration everywhere, from galleries and nature to the tiny details most people walk right past, including the magnificent underside of a mushroom.

As a young person, I carried bags of M&M's so that whenever I felt awkward, I could offer them around and say, "M&M's make friends." It almost always made people smile, and lightening the mood is still one of my favorite things to do.

At Creative Art Place, it's not just about mixing paints. It's about mixing passion with purpose and helping each artist create their own colorful mark on the world.

Courtney Hughes, Chief Facilitator of Fun, in the art room

Chief Facilitator of Fun

Courtney Hughes

Meet Courtney Hughes, our Chief Facilitator of Fun at Creative Art Place! Courtney has a gift for turning an ordinary art class into an experience children remember. She brings kindness, creativity, energy, and a whole lot of fun into the studio, creating a space where kids feel comfortable experimenting, expressing themselves, and discovering their own artistic voice.

What Courtney loves most about teaching is the opportunity to positively guide the next generation. She wants young artists to leave her classroom with more confidence than they brought in and with the understanding that their ideas matter.

One of Courtney's greatest art-room superpowers is making every child feel seen and heard. She learns names remarkably quickly, notices the quiet kid who needs encouragement, and has a wonderful way of making every student feel like an important part of the room.

When she is creating for herself, Courtney especially loves painting landscapes in oils and acrylics. Her artistic inspiration comes from a delightfully varied trio: Georgia O'Keeffe, Salvador Dalí, and, of course, Mr. Bob Ross.

Courtney describes herself as fun, kind, and artistic. She is also an enthusiastic animal lover, with turtles holding the top spot as her favorite. And if she had to choose a Disney princess? Definitely Snow White.

At Creative Art Place, Courtney does more than teach art. She creates experiences, builds confidence, and gives children happy creative memories they can carry with them long after the paint dries.

Alannah Nolan, Explorer of Art and Adventure

Explorer of Art & Adventure

Alannah Nolan

Meet Alannah Nolan, our Explorer of Art & Adventure at Creative Art Place! Alannah brings a wonderful mix of creativity, curiosity, and real-world adventure into everything she teaches.

Before turning her creative energy toward art, Alannah spent years as a dedicated ballerina in a pre-professional program, training until the age of 18. That experience gave her an appreciation for discipline, movement, expression, and the many different ways artists can communicate without words.

Adventure seems to run in the family. Growing up in a boating and freediving family, Alannah has explored reefs around the world alongside whales, dolphins, sharks, manta rays, and plenty of other remarkable sea creatures. Since graduating from college, she has continued exploring on land, traveling through nearly 40 states and experiencing different places and cultures through their art.

One of her most memorable artistic experiences was learning traditional Northwest Coast wood carving from master carver Wayne Price, an opportunity that deepened her appreciation for the stories, traditions, and cultures behind the art we create.

At Creative Art Place, Alannah brings that same sense of discovery into the classroom. She encourages young artists to experiment, ask questions, try something unfamiliar, and see just how big the world of art can be.

Ella Hodges, Champion of Happy Accidents

Champion of Happy Accidents

Ella Hodges

Meet Ella Hodges, our Champion of Happy Accidents at Creative Art Place! Ella has been making art for as long as she can remember, pretty much since she could hold a pencil or a stick. She earned her B.F.A. in Graphic Design from UTC and brings a wonderfully funky mix of fine art, design, collage, and creative experimentation into the classroom.

Ask Ella about her favorite medium and there is absolutely no hesitation. It is 1000% oil paint. She also loves creating collages from old magazines and scraps of paper, painting with acrylics, and designing posters that can completely change the personality of a room.

What Ella loves most about teaching is watching a child begin with an idea and turn it into something entirely their own, even when it happily wanders away from the original project. If a student has a vision, Ella wants to help them figure out how to bring it to life.

Her art-room philosophy is simple: trust the process and trust the medium. Whatever happens will be FABULOUS. Funky, goofy, and intuitive, Ella loves artists and designers who break rules, reveal the creative process, and make people look twice.

Outside the studio, Ella is a plant mom to 37 plant babies, can paint and draw with both hands, and once thrifted a Kandinsky-inspired artwork and spent an entire year convinced she had somehow found the real thing.

At Creative Art Place, Ella encourages kids to take creative risks, trust their instincts, and enjoy discovering something they never planned in the first place.

Adelaide Anglada, Curator of Creative Connections

Curator of Creative Connections

Adelaide Anglada

Meet Adelaide Anglada, our Curator of Creative Connections at Creative Art Place! With a bachelor's degree in Art History and Arts Administration, Adelaide has a wonderful way of connecting what young artists are creating today with the artists, ideas, and stories that came before them.

Adelaide has been making art since childhood and began showing her own work in galleries in 2020. Her favorite medium is printmaking, especially linocut, and she also loves photography. Much of her inspiration comes from simply paying attention to the world around her, whether she is wandering through a city, walking in the woods, or happily getting lost in a museum.

What Adelaide loves most about teaching is helping children use art as a way to express themselves. Her art-room superpower is finding an art history connection for just about any project, giving students a glimpse into the much bigger creative story they are becoming part of themselves.

Adelaide describes herself as creative, empathetic, and enthusiastic, and her interests stretch well beyond visual art. She plays five instruments and is currently learning two more, loves to sew, and collects old photographs and vintage projector slides. If something has a story, a little history, or the potential to become something creative, chances are Adelaide is interested.

At Creative Art Place, Adelaide helps young artists see that art is not just something you make. It is something you discover, share, and add your own voice to.

Donna Rudolph, Champion of Possibility

Champion of Possibility

Donna Rudolph

Meet Donna Rudolph, our Champion of Possibility at Creative Art Place! Donna is one of those wonderfully creative people who seems able to make something out of just about anything. She sews, builds, transforms, repurposes, and creates with a natural eye for seeing what something could become.

Donna has spent more than a decade working with children in the Hamilton County public school system and brings that experience, patience, and encouragement into every class she teaches. She lovingly holds her students to a high standard, and they have a remarkable way of rising to meet it. Again and again, her young artists surprise themselves with what they are capable of creating.

Her creativity extends far beyond the art room. Donna loves thrifting, antiques, and forgotten treasures, especially finding pieces with character and giving them new life before sending them on to be loved again. She has also sewn everything from everyday creations to costumes for high school band performances.

A mom of three and a devoted animal lover, Donna has a particularly soft spot for rescue animals. She has helped care for and rehabilitate cats and dogs, often working alongside local veterinarians to help animals who need a little extra love.

At Creative Art Place, Donna has a wonderful ability to see potential everywhere. In a discarded treasure. In an unexpected material. And most importantly, in every child who walks into her classroom.
