Technique they can build on

Teens build on the same foundations as every class here: the elements of art, the principles of design and plenty of drawing. Then they push further:

  • Wet on wet and wet on dry watercolor
  • Tight, careful painting, and abstract painting
  • Clay building and hand building
  • Stippling and cross hatching

Jennifer sees these as the basics an artist keeps growing on "all the way up through adulthood."

Teens who want to focus can look at our drawing classes and painting classes.

Art history, at a teen level

We study master artists from the past alongside contemporary artists, plus the periods and movements in art, as their age allows. With teenagers, that goes a long way.

In Jennifer's words, "art is about alchemy and exploration and experimentation." Teens get room to test ideas, borrow from the artists they admire and find their own style.

Where the teen class fits

Our teen art classes in Chattanooga sit between our kids classes, where most artists are 5 to 12, and our grown-up classes. Teens who grew up making art with us can keep going, and newcomers are just as welcome.

Materials go well beyond the basics: watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, mixed media, soft pastels and oil pastels, often in combination.

Taught by working artists

Our teachers make their own art, too. Ella Hodges has a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from UTC and is 1000% devoted to oil paint. Courtney Hughes paints landscapes in oils and acrylics.

That means your teen learns from people who still wrestle with a canvas themselves, and who love talking about the artists who inspire them.

Prefer one to one?

Some teens would rather work one to one, whether that's mastering a medium or building a portfolio. Private art lessons are built around exactly what they want to learn, one hour a week, for $180 a month.

Plenty of teens do both: the class for the company, and a private hour for the project they care about most.
